EDS formed the automotive division shortly after being acquired by General Motors Corp. in 1984. It provided dealer management systems solely to GM dealers until 1996, when it split from GM and was allowed to pursue non-GM dealers.

EDS has been Saturn Corp.'s primary dealer-management-systems provider since 1988. Saturn renewed the contract with EDS in 2002.
